Sesriem Namibia Wildlife Resort Camp

Sesriem campsite is situated inside the Namib Naukluft Park and beacuse of that fact, it is possible for people staying there to start the drive to the beautiful Sossusvlei long enough before sunrise to be able to be at the Vlei at sunrise, which is very important, since that is the time when the colours on the dunes are the best.

This is a privilege not shared by the other private camps in the area. This has been for years the main reason why many people stayed in the Sesriem Camp, but since the camp has been renovated and the facilities much improved, it is now actually a very nice camp to stay at.

Apart from a shop, a garage and a pub, they also have nearby the Sesriem Canyon, which is a natural phenomenon that is quite interesting and enjoyable to visit. Centuries of erosion cut a narrow gorge about 1 km in length into the earth. Down, inside the gorge, about 30 to 40 meters deep, are pools of water that is an indication of the depth of the water table in this area.

The name "Sesriem" were attached to the place when it took six lengths of rawhide to be tied together to be able to hoist drinking water from the bottom of the canyon to the top. One length of rawhide was called a "Riem".

The camping sites offered at Sesriem camp are mostly next to and under large Camelthorn trees, which you will learn to love in this dry area, since these trees has the ability to survive where few other trees can.

The main attraction for staying at Sesriem actually remains the existence of one of the most beautiful natural areas nearby - Sossusvlei.

The name Sossusvlei comes from the Nama word "sossus" which means "dead end" and the Afrikaans word "vlei", which describes a marshy area, which is a good description for the place where the Tsauchab River stops in a dead end.

Sossusvlei is a photographer's heaven and the landscapes that one see here are just undescribable and one of the best reasons to visit Namibia. You will not forget this place.
