Bagatelle Game Ranch

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch consists of a lodge with its accommodation and a camping area. The lodge has a lounge, dining room, bar with wine cellar and a library. It's luxurious chalets are built in three styles, with some of the chalets built on top of a dune with wonderful views over the "street" between two parallel dunes.

The camping area have only five individual campsites, spaced far from each other. Each has a neat little building with a toilet, washbasin, shower and mirror. Water is heated with a gas geyser and the lighting is powered with a solar panel.

Sometimes the camp receives a little unexpected guest in the form of a tame little female springbuck who likes to forage in things like shopping bags where the smell of fruit and vegetables may linger.

On our first night here, we were sitting around the campfire and heard a loud noise coming from the ablution building. We thought it may be a hyena or a jackal looking for meat, but found this little springbuck with a plastic bag with potatoes in it, caught on her horns and she trying her best to shake this thing off. We helped her with that task, just to find she is not really worried about us handling her, as long as we just give her a potato!

She later became a very welcome little visitor and we loved having her so near. There is also a tame Oryx, who I think we will be very wary of, since it may be quite dangerous due to its size.

They also have cheetas on the ranch, but they are kept in a large camp where they are being fed. One may accompany them at a rather stiff price, when they go to feed the cheetas, which is used to cover the cost of feeding them.

We also had a very tasty dinner in the lodge, which was rather expensive, but very tasty and ample, but at about double the price we pay for such a meal in South African lodges, it may be something to skip in future.

Lastly, we want to mention the friendly service we received here. The camping sites are exceptional and come at a good price for the excellent facilities and layout. We stayed two nights and we felt that was a bit short. We could have stayed another night just to be able to walk some distance on the dune behind our camp to get the feel of the place and the animals and plants of this part of the Kalahari.

We recommend Bagatelle Ranch for a somewhat luxurious camping two to three day stayover for campers, with a little longer for non-campers.
