Two Rivers to Rooiputs

Our Trip Report

Distance about 24 km.

Before driving out for the next trip along the Nossob river, we quickly had another cool shower in the clean ablution block of Two Rivers camp. It is always good to start a hot day in a wet way - something to remember in Africa.

Two Rivers Camp to Rooiputs Camp, Botswana

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is an immensely large tract of land about 3,6 million hectares where the red dunes and scrub fade into infinity and herds of gemsbok, springbok, eland, ostrich and blue wildebeest roam the endless dune landscape.

The kalahari, where shady camel thorn trees serve as home to many a bird and animal who hides from the scorching sun in its ample shade.

This large tract of nature is being shared by South Africa and Botswana. There is a South African side with three large camps with comparatively luxurious accommodation, shops and camping facilities. The Botswana side is less luxurious, but still very functional camping that appeals to a different kind of tourist. It appeals to those who want their bush experience to be an adventure and not just another "Ride in the Park".

To cater for these adventurers, the Botswana side has several camps in the Park. They are: Two Rivers, a camp with basic camping facilities and it is situated near Twee Rivieren Camp on the South African Side. Then there is Rooiputs, about 20 km away from Twee Rivieren towards Nossob. This camp is very beautifully situated and is also not fenced, with animals roaming freely in and around the camp.

Since these camps are not frequented by the same numbers of people going to the South african camps, one may very well get a camping spot in one of these camps when the others are fully booked.
