We bought the neccessary permit to go into and camp in the Namib Naukluft Park the previous day in Swakopmund, so we could leave early and see the desert while the mist is still hanging over it.

Swakopmund to Kuiseb Bridge
The Namib Naukluft Park is the largest game park in Africa (40 000 sq. km) and the fourth largest in the world. The park consists of four sections, namely Sossusvlei and Sesriem, Naukluft, Namib section and Sandwich Harbour.
The Namib part features the camping sites at Mirabib, Kuiseb river bridge, Homeb, Kries-se-Rus, Blutkoppe, Vogelfederberg, Tinkas and Ganab. Visitors must provide own equipment, water, food and fire wood.
Some of these camping places are stunningly beautiful and highly recommended by nature lovers.
One can visit the hiding places the were used by Henno Martin, his companion and their dog during their Second World War adventure described in his book:"The Sheltering Desert", which became an adventure must-read for young boys and adults alike.
It is advisable to visit the remote areas with a 4x4 or 4x2 high clearance vehicle.
