From Namwi Island to Camp Kwando, Caprivi

Camp Kwando is on the banks of the Kwando River, in a beautiful area: The Caprivi. The Camp is located about 100km from Katima Mulilo (via the B8), at the junction of Botswana, Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe.

The Caprivi offers lush flood plains, reed-filled swamps and a sub-tropical wilderness, spectacular birdwatching and game viewing opportunities, tranquil and unfussy tented camps, campsites and lodge accommodation.

Large expanses of open water are fringed with palm trees, reeds and papyrus. Flood plains are dotted with broad-leafed woodlands and the wildlife is mostly riverine.

Attaining its odd shape from the powers that were during colonial times, this strip of land covers about 20,000sq km between the Zambezi and Okavango Rivers. The 450km strip is 30km wide at its narrowest and 100km at its widest.

Rivers bordering the Caprivi are the Okavango, Zambezi and Chobe Rivers. A single perennial river alternately named the Kwando, Mashi, Linyanti and Chobe passes through the Caprivi. The Caprivi records the highest rainfall in Namibia - up to 700mm - making this strip of land more like the southern parts of central Africa.

Camp Kwando is sandwiched between the Botswana border to the west and the Mudumu National Park to the east. Eight thatched chalets line the bank of a small island in the Kwando River and there are three up-market tree houses on higher ground. The island chalets have open-air bathrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets and you can fish from your balcony. While hurricane lamps set the mood, the lush African bush will do all the seducing. Although similar, the tree houses raise the bar in the style, romance and view departments.

A camping area with ten sites makes good use of the shaded area between lodge and island. Facilities include communal ablutions with hot showers, and a laundry and scullery area.

Despite the civilising effects of a well-tended lawn and a grand entrance, Camp Kwando remains charming, rustic and remote and will not bowl you over for price.
