Description: Swarthoek trails offer a unique Bushveld experience to the nature lover who wants to experience peace and tranquility of the undisturbed bush with a 4x4, on a walking trail, canoe or mountain bike. There are 4 hiking trails (2 km - 19 km long), 4 4x4 trails over a distance of about 30 km (grading 2-3) and a canoe route of 5 km. The hiking- and 4x4 trails and camps are developed in line with the development plan compiled by the Centre for Eco Tourism (University of Pretoria - 1994) to ensure that the routes are eco friendly.

Location: 25 km from Pretoria, 40 km from Johannesburg, 16 km from Hartbeespoort Dam.
Description: 27.48 km/ 2day; easy to average; circular; First day 11,33 km. Second day 6,15 km. The Hennops hiking trail comprise two-day trails setting out from two base camps. The beginning and end of both trails meanders along the Hennopsriver before it veers away into the surrounding mountains. Loerie camp: 20 persons. Three rondavels - two sleeping 6, one sleeping 8. Communal veld kitchen with electricity, fridge, kettle, two plate stove, pots, pans, flat bottom and three-legged potjie. Ablution block with 2 basins, showers and toilets. Hadeda camp: 18 persons. Farmhouse with 2 rooms and rondavel. Each room has 3 bunk beds sleeping 6 persons. Facilities - same as Loerie camp. Swimming pools at Loerie camp and several swimming holes in river. Day hikers: Proceed to Hadeda camp for parking and braai facilities.
Comments: In the heart of Gauteng, virtually on the doorstep of both Johannesburg and Pretoria, hikers can now experience one of the few unspoilt nature areas near the Hartebeespoortdam. Apart from the 9 mammal species in the game camp, kudu thrives in this area and may be seen all over the farm. The bird life promises to be outstanding with the presence of indigenous trees along the river, the gorges and plateau areas. Carry water. Water not drinkable from river. In the event of the Hennopsriver being in flood, Loerie camp hikers will be taken by vehicle from the owners house to a place whence baggage can be carried via the suspension bridge to Loerie camp. Location: 30 km west of Pretoria and 50 km from Johannesburg, in the vicinity of the Hartbeespoort Dam.
Description: 7,5 kilometres; 4,5 to 5,5 hours; circular; easy to difficult, with optional extreme section. The Uitkyk trail is a well-marked path describing a loop up the northern slopes of the mountains in the vicinity of the Hartbeespoort Dam and within the boundary of the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment (MPNE).The trail follows a route over varied topography from high grassland, through extensive natural woodland, down rocky kloofs and up the mountain slopes. There is an easy route for the less fit and a scenic route for those seeking a challenge. There are spectacular views from the summit. Facilities: Fenced car park with toilets and showers. Braai stands - bring own charcoal/wood.
Comments: Dry hike, so carry 2 litres of water per hiker. Avoid sunburn and be prepared for changes in the weather. Do not walk over the R513 - use the tunnel. Do not walk alone.

Rustig - Krans Route

Location: Rustig Farm off the R560 near Hekpoort
Description: Krans Route - 7 Km. Following this hiking trail brings you up close to the towering Magaliesberg cliffs. The route traverses through indigenous woodland and past impressive mountain caves. New Years Cave is a giant overhang that acquired its name thanks to the local farmers who welcomed the New Year from this beautiful vantage point.
Comments: Winding through the forest this is a great choice for a summers day, listen out for the Red billed Wood Hoepoes as they laugh off the heat of the day and the Red breasted cuckoos as they call out 'Piet-my-vrou' The trail joins the descent path at 'Klipmuurnek', the stone wall fortification built in the early 1900's.

Rustig - Kruin Route

Location: Rustig Farm off the R560 near Hekpoort
Description: Kruin Route 10-12 Km. Leaving the dry forest environment behind, wind your way through the open woodland with plentiful Suikerbos trees up to the cliff and through 'Tweeboomnekkie' named after the two Mountain Cabbage trees that stood in the pass - A useful wood in the days of Ox wagons, one was chopped down by a Wagon driver who needed to make brake pads for his ox wagon. The trail follows the crest of the mountains, with impressive views over 'Die Moot' to the South and towards Groenkloof and Brits on the Northern side. Glancing down over the cliffs you may spot the dainty Klipspringer, Mountain rhebok, baboons and rock dassies. Don't forget to raise your eyes to the sky and perhaps the resident Black Eagles or the Cape Vultures will glide silently above you.
Comments: Options to visit the old Anglo Boer war fortifications extend the standard trail by 2 km. Find a spot between the whimsical quartzite rocks to enjoy your picnic before descending through the heather.

Description: Onderberg Route - 5km. This trail is perfect for a leisurely walk, it has great views of the Spectacular cliffs of the Magaliesberg. The trees you're most likely to encounter are White Stinkwood, Wild & False Olive, Knobwood and if you're hiking in January the scent from the wild gardenia is beautiful. If you walk quietly you may encounter the Common Duiker, Vervet monkeys, chameleons and small mammals.
Comments: Perfect for young family members, new walkers and anyone wanting to relax and perhaps picnic in the shade.
