Hikers will find enjoyment in the interesting combination of gorges, mountain streams and the highveld plateaus which offer beautiful vistas of the surrounding landscapes. The presence of gushing waterfalls, fast flowing mountain streams, indigenous trees, shrubs, veld flowers and the opportunity to spot several antelope species, bushpigs, cat family members and excellent bird-life will add to pleasurable hiking of this area. Overnight facilities: Kloof: 3 huts each with 8 beds. Inkungu camp has 4 huts each with 6 beds. Ablution facilities include donkey boilers for hot/cold showers, flush toilets, basins. Kitchen has 2 plate gas cooker, pots, pans, potjies, braai facilities and wood. Undercover kitchen facilities and lapas.
Comments: Supply own lights, tick repellent. During heavy rains the engineers release water from the Nooitgedacht dam. This may result that bridges are flooded for ñ an hour thereby delaying access to Kloof.

Description: Day trail; approx 7 km; average to difficult; circular; 21 day hikers max. Hikers will be pleasantly surprised at the diversity of terrain and flora on the Suikerboschfontein hiking trail. The unexpected beauty of the transvaal highveld comes into its own here. The trail is situated on the escarpment, approximately 20 km north-east of Carolina on the farm Suikerboschfontein which has been in the same family for nearly 100 years. Part of this trail traverses the Paulina van Niekerk private nature reserve. The terrain over which the trail traverses follows a winding trail through the basin and several deep gorges. The strong flowing mountain streams filled with indigenous trees and several varieties of ferns (some of the tree ferns being several metres high), offer cool and shady hiking conditions. Huge kiepersol and yellow wood trees are seen along the trail. Drumbraai and wood supplied at Day hike Lunch spot.

Location: Take the Cradock / Middelburg Road (N10). Cradock is about 250 km from Port Elizabeth. Turn west onto the Graaff-Reinet Road (R61). From Cradock the turn-off to the Park is well sign-posted.
Description: Nature trails; hiking from 15 minutes to 5 hours. Route maps for hikers; reservations not necessary. Amenities: Eighteen, four-bed, well-equipped chalets at the tourist rest camp, 20 caravan and camping facilities; launderette, conference hall, restaurant, shop, petrol, swimming pool. Doornhoek guest cottage (historic, renovated farmhouse) sleeps 6. Meals are available from the restaurant; a shop supplies basic commodities.
Comments: Situated in the Mountain Zebra National Park, mountains, birds, plants and animals in lovely surroundings. Offers viewing of Cape mountain zebra as well as springbok, eland, blesbok, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and many other Cape Midland animals. The rare booted eagle is one of the 255 species of birds recorded in the Park.

Location: Northwest of Fort Beaufort. The reserve is located off the Post Retief road between Adelaide (50 km) and Fort Beaufort (25 km).
Description: There are four circular trails that can be completed in a day, and a two-day, 25 km hike that accommodates a maximum of 8 hikers. Amenities: Picnic and braai sites are located alongside a dam and in the shade of an old, spreading oak. Horses are available to ride. Accommodation is available at Harris Hut (eight people) overlooking a stream in the indigenous forest; Lourie's Rest (12 people) near the office with a view of the Hogsback Mountains; and Phakamisa House (eight people) on a spur of the mountain overlooking the Katberg. All are fully equipped but only Lourie's Rest has electricity.
Comments: This 2 146 ha reserves conserves grassveld of the escarpment and indigenous forests of the valleys and kloofs. Mammals include black wildebeest, red hartebeest, bushbuck, Burchell's zebra, mountain reedbuck, blue duiker, baboon and tree dassie. The large variety of birds includes the threatened Cape parrot.

Vergezient - The New Beginnings Trail

Description: The New Beginnings trail starts off with a walk along the cliff edge until Yellowwood Kloof is reached, where the trail descends to the second terrace of the escarpment and to Folly Ridge falls. The well marked path then descends through a forested kloof until the "Old Opstal" is reached. From here the route follows an old road to "The Ford", where the Vergezient Stream is crossed. From the natural splash pools the hiker has a panorama view of the northern and central Drakensberg. A short distance from here is the New Beginnings cave. Here can be viewed ancient bushman drawings of long ago. From the cave the trail ascends through a beautiful forested kloof passing the Vergezient falls and a lovely natural rock pool, after which a short walk takes the hiker back to the Barnhouse. Hikers are accommodated in The Barnhouse, a well equipped and comfortable base from which to do the trails. Gas geysers provide hot water for the showers while fire places at each end of the covered stoop provide Braai facilities in all weather conditions.

Description: The Razor Edge trail is not as difficult as the New Beginnings trail and can be easily accomplished in a morning. The trail starts with a climb down through Vergezient Kloof. From the base of the kloof the trail continues along the steep slopes of the mountain side until aptly named Razors Edge is reached. Here the trail once more takes the hiker to the top of the mountain. From the vantage point at the top one has an incredible view of the Tugela valley and also the surrounding sandstone hills of the eastern Free State. The Uitkyk trail is a well-marked path describing a loop up the northern slopes of the mountains in the vicinity of the Hartbeespoort Dam and within the boundary of the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment (MPNE).The trail follows a route over varied topography from high grassland, through extensive natural woodland, down rocky kloofs and up the mountain slopes. There is an easy route for the less fit and a scenic route for those seeking a challenge. There are spectacular views from the summit. Facilities: Fenced car park with toilets and showers. Braai stands - bring own charcoal/wood.

Leaving the dry forest environment behind, wind your way through the open woodland with plentiful Suikerbos trees up to the cliff and through 'Tweeboomnekkie' named after the two Mountain Cabbage trees that stood in the pass - A useful wood in the days of Ox wagons, one was chopped down by a Wagon driver who needed to make brake pads for his ox wagon. The trail follows the crest of the mountains, with impressive views over 'Die Moot' to the South and towards Groenkloof and Brits on the Northern side. Glancing down over the cliffs you may spot the dainty Klipspringer, Mountain rhebok, baboons and rock dassies. Don't forget to raise your eyes to the sky and perhaps the resident Black Eagles or the Cape Vultures will glide silently above you.
Comments: Options to visit the old Anglo Boer war fortifications extend the standard trail by 2 km. Find a spot between the whimsical quartzite rocks to enjoy your picnic before descending through the heather.

Description: Various route options are offered on the southern slopes of the Amatola Mountains at Hogsback: - A circular route from the Hogsback entrance, via the Big Tree, Madonna and Child Waterfalls and back to the start along the Wolfridge Road: 8 km. - From the Hogsback entrance, via the Big Tree, Madonna and Child Waterfalls, and returning to the start the same way: 8 km. - Circular route from Hogsback entrance, via the Big Tree, Swallow Tail Falls and back to the start along the Wolfridge Road: 5,5 km. - Short walk from Waterfall entrance parking to Madonna and Child Waterfalls and return: about 1 km. The recommended minimum group size is three. Permit not required: visitors may enter the reserve at any time during daylight hours.
Comments: The 218 ha Auckland Nature Reserve adjoins extensive plantations and conserves indigenous high forest. A high rainfall area (summer months are the wettest) and, though the summers are cool and refreshing, the best time to visit the reserve is probably June to September. Snow in winter is common. Numerous well-signposted day trails have been established in the reserve and surrounding forest. The reserve is noted for its rich bird diversity that includes brightly coloured species, such as the African golden oriole, redbilled hornbill, Knysna loerie and rare Knysna parrot. Common mammals include bushbuck, duiker, bushpig, porcupine, vervet and samango monkeys, and rare tree dassie. Several scenic waterfalls, such as the Madonna and Child and Kettlespout are worth a visit. The Big Tree is an old Outeniqa Yellowwood, also known as the Eastern Monarch and is estimated to be 800 years old. Woodcutters used the Sawpits in the past to cut logs into planks.

Description: Alberts Farm may not be known by many Johannesburg residents but it certainly has a number of good points that should be taken into account when one is looking for a place to go for a walk on a weekend afternoon in Johannesburg. The conservancy consists of about 90ha of small rocky ridges, undulating grassland stretching down to the wetland area along the Montgomery Spruit. The area is ideal for dog walking and kite flying while the more avid walker might enjoy exploring the spruit downstream to where it joins up with the Braamfontein Spruit Security Alberts Farm is perhaps one of the safer parks in the city. It should however be remembered that it is a public open space and as such basic precautions should be adhered to. Try to walk in a small group of people. Leave all your valuables at home. Always be conscious of what is going on around you. Johannesburg City Parks and the Friends of Albert's Farm Conservancy try to make your visit to the park a safe and pleasant occasion but in common with parks and public open spaces throughout the world, there is always risks. The onus is on the individual to ensure his or her own safety.

The trail winds past a disused sawmill and logging rail (dating from 1910) and returns following the course of the Evelyn Stream. Another trail, the Sandile Trail, leads to the cave used by Paramount Chief Shortly before his death in 1878. The grave of Sandile lies on the edge of the forest and is a place of veneration and a national monument. Birds are abundant, both aquatic and terrestrial.

Cycad Trail

Description: The Cycad Trail is 11km in length and can be walked in about 3 hours. The trail follows a farm road for some distance before entering a beautiful rocky gorge. The trail follows this gorge for a while and there is plenty of rock hopping along the way. In summer months the rock pools present swimming opportunities not to be missed. Slagthoek basecamp consists of an old thatched farmhouse reached by way of 18km sand road. There is a kitchen with fridge and gas stove. Hot water for the shower is provided by way of a donkey boiler which the attendant looks after. The lounge has easy chairs and some reading material. Lighting is by way of paraffin lamps. Outside there is a braai with grid. Wood is supplied at a charge. There is a padlock on a gate along the road, so make sure that you have the combination number

Gods' Window Trail

Description: This trail is 12km long and for the most part of it can be considered easy. The trail follows the edge of the escarpment offering spectacular views of the Olifants river gorge. There are several places along the route that can used for a tea break or just to relax and take in the breathtaking views.The trail eventually leaves the mountain tops and begins its descent through prime woodland with fine examples of Stamvrug, Boekenhout and several species of Combretum. The last section of the trail takes the hiker up along a narrow wooded kloof. There is quite a bit of boulder hopping. Take it easy as you only have about 2km to go to the hut. Slagthoek basecamp consists of an old thatched farmhouse reached by way of 18km sand road.

Description: The Uitsoek Hiking Trail is situated in the Mpumalanga lowveld, close to the Sudwala caves and not far from the town of Nelspruit. The trail is set in the Uitsoek plantation and explores the richness of the indigenous forests, mountain streams and surrounding mountain grandeur. The overnight backpack route is quite strenuous and should be attempted by fit and experienced hikers only. The trails start from Uitsoek hut which is situated on the outskirts of Uitsoek forest station. Uitsoek hut is well equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, tables and chairs, undercover Braai facilities and two plate electric stove. The first day of the overnight hike is 15Km long and climbs over 900m during the course of the day. Lisabon hut is a welcome sight at the end of a long day's hike. There are twelve bed and mattresses plus a table and chairs. Outside there is a Braai area and in the nearby plantation there is a toilet Neville Grading: 11.04

Description: There are no facilities apart from a few indistinct tracks that dissect it. The hiker can choose his own route and number of days he spends in the area and pitches his/her tent anywhere they choose. Normally wilderness hiking is undertaken by experienced hikers equipped with tents and everything they may possibly need to cover any eventuality. Map reading skills are essential as is a knowledge of First Aid. Examples of wilderness areas are Cederberg, Groot Winterhoek Wolkberg and The Drakensberg. The Wolkberg is a rugged area and hiking in this area can be classed as strenuous and should be only attempted by those who are fit. The hike leader should be an experienced hiker with strong leadership skills

Description: Bergheim is situated in the northern part of the Magaliesberg mountains, not far from Rustenburg in North West Province. The resort offers great hiking opportunities for people who need to break away for the day from the city and the shopping malls. Bergheim is also ideal for a camping or caravanning weekend and has a swimming pool braai facilities and tuck shop. A day hike at Bergheim makes for a good days outing, but it should be noted that the walk is largely unmarked and therefore needs a fare amount of orienteering to prevent getting lost. However, if you keep the gorge and stream in consideration, it should not present any problems. The climb to the top can be strenuous especially in summer and it is important to have an early start and take plenty of drinking water along (2 litres recommended)

Description: 10 km/2 to 3 hours; average. The hike takes you through indigenous forest or along steep mountain tracks on the farm Glen Avon. There is a spectacular waterfall, which plunges 80 m into a riverine-forested valley where sneezewood and cabbage trees grow. The waterfall and the kloof have been declared the Glen Avon Falls Natural Heritage Site (No 71). Bird watchers could identify 235 species of birds, ranging from small sunbirds to birds of prey and an occasional sighting of the rare Cape Vulture. Large game includes kudu, bushbuck, duiker and mountain reedbuck. A two bed roomed, 4-bed, fully furnished, self-catering guest lodge. Meals are available on request. Glen Avon Falls is open throughout the year for farm activities, trout fishing, swimming, canoeing, bird watching, controlled bushbuck hunting in season and hiking. Day outings with a 4x4 can be arranged at an extra charge.

Description: Red Day Walk (17 km): This circular route passes through indigenous forest and grassland. Hikers will encounter three waterfalls, providing the only drinking water available on the route. Yellow Day Walk (7 km): This circular route follows part of the Red Day Walk. Blue Day Walk (3 km): You will encounter three spectacular waterfalls where you can sit down and enjoy the beauty of the forest. The return route is the same way. Walk to Anderson's Dam (8 km): A road takes to you to the dam and back. You can enjoy a picnic at the dam. Amenities: Braai facilities, toilets, picnic tables and a small outdoor information centre are provided at the picnic site.
Comments: Situated at the eastern end of the Amatolas, the tall yellowwoods and white stinkwood trees of the Kologha State Forest invite day visitors into the cool canopy of shady walks. The forest provides ideal habitat for bushpig, samango monkeys, bats and numerous birds. Water birds and browsing duiker add to the enjoyment of the hiker. There are several marked day trails, taking in waterfalls, and trout-fishing opportunities. Mountain bikes and horses are permitted on certain trails.

Location: 8 km southeast of Tarkastad. Take the Bedford road from Tarkastad, turn left into the Upper Black Kei Road.
Description: Activities include game watching, climbing, hunting in season and hiking the 8 km trail. It is fairly steep in parts and starts and ends at Lily Fountain. There are periodic exhibitions of traditional dancing. Accommodation is in self-catering or fully catered colonial-style lodges.
Comments: This 3 000 ha reserve adjoins Tsolwana Nature Reserve. Members of the Amaquati clan control it. Various vegetation types support blesbok, mountain reedbuck, springbuck, impala and Hartmann's zebra. There is a breeding colony of Cape vultures.

Description: The trail caters for 20 hikers and consists of two circular day hikes of 14Km and 7Km. Close by another trail (The Slang River Trail) which is 10Km long, can also be enjoyed. The hiking trails centre around the Slang river and the Buffels river. The area is very picturesgue and although there is little shade against the sun there is usually plenty of pools to take refuge in from the heat of the day. This trail is in an area that has been somewhat neglected in the last few years by hiking but is well worth a visit. The accommodation is of a suitable standard that the whole family can enjoy, even Gran. Welverdiend Hiking Trail is situated 21Km west of Volksrust and 250Km from Gauteng.
