Description: The Tepelkop Hiking Trail is a lovely weekend trail and suitable for anyone with some degree of fitness. The area can get very hot during summer and very cold during winter. The accommodation is better equipped than most. The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, electric kettle and has a microwave oven. Ablutions include hot showers flushing toilets and hand basins. The beds have thick comfortable mattresses. There are electric lights and plugs. Outside there is an undercover braai. Supply your own wood or charcoal. The first day of the trail is 12km long. The second day 10 km.

Nuwerus Day Trails

Location: Situated in the Bre‰krans river valley. From the town of Op Die Berg follow a sign that says Cederberg/ Ceres Karoo, Nuwerust is 63km further (18km tar and 45km gravel road).
Description: Waterfall Route: This is a 6km circular route on the lower slopes of Klipbokkop with pleasant views and gentle walking. Duration 3 hours (seasonal water only). Rooiberg Route: This 12km route is a more strenuous trail climbing the impressive Rooiberg towering immediately above the rest camp. The trail then winds back down to the Bre‰krans River (3km downstream of the starting point) and heads back to the rest camp. The trail is steep to begin with, but rewards the energetic hiker with fantastic views. Duration 5 - 6 hours. Klipbokkop Route: This 12km route is for the experienced hiker with some scrambling on the final sections. The whole route is marked with cairns to guide you. Duration 6 hrs. Dassieklippe and bushman paintings: This 10.2km trail climbs the Rooiberg to a height of 984m, this is a historical trail wich includes bushman paintings of interest of the region, an amazing experience, the duration is approximately 6 hours.
Comments: All the routes are characterised by rocky terrain and should be tackled with suitable hiking shoes. Maps are available from the office and permits are required for non-residents. Accommodation is available in fully equipped self catering cottages at Nuwerus Rest Camp, each with its own bathroom and braai area. Bedding on request. Camping facilities also available. Description: The Cederberg Wilderness area in the Western Cape Province ranks alongside the Drakensberg in KwaZulu Natal, the Wolkberg in Limpopo Province and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia as being the prime hiking destinations for the experienced hiker who loves the freedom given by hiking in Wilderness areas. Most hikers start out on their adventure into the mountains from Algeria campsite, not far from the picturesque towns of Clan William and Citrusdal. The campsite has full ablution facilities and a little tuck shop. There is also swimming opportunities in a pool in the river. The top at last! Here we first become aware of the rock formation and flowers that are going to become apart of our life for the next few days. From Middelberg hut we progressed to Sleepad hut. From Sleepad hut we decided to make for Tafelberg, a route mostly along a jeep track. The Wolfberg arch is a well known landmark and the subject of numerous photos but no photos can do justice to this amazing creation of nature. There are few Ceders left in the Cederberg but occasionally you do come across one. The Cederberg is an amazing place. We just touched the fringes of the area and we hiked for five days. Although there are some small huts, these can be occupied by other groups and therefore tents are a must.

Description: Various loop trails (back to base), 12, 6 and 4 km. Routes may be combined. The trail has Green Flag Status. Breathtaking mountain valleys with indigenous forests and rock pools that can be explored on hiking trails varying in distance between 4 km and 12 km. The trails are rich in cultural and historical sites like genuine Bushman rock art paintings, Pedi and Swazi Kraals as well as sites of the Anglo Boer War. There is plenty of time to cool off in the refreshing waters of one of the many rock pools. It is breathtaking to take in the magnificent sight of the Bankspruit Waterfall which is the second highest waterfall in Mpumalanga.
Comments: The Stables provides accommodation for up to 40 people. The original farm stables have been renovated to provide comfortable backpackers accommodation in rooms with bunk beds and a loft with views over the escarpment. There is a boma with with braai facilities, electric stove, hotplate, refrigerator, pots and mattresses. The ablution facilities have hot and cold showers and flush toilets. The trail has Green Flag status.

Description: 12km, Day loop, moderate. This beautifully laid out path takes you over the Skurwerand, a spectacular landscape of wind and water eroded ancient sandstone, filled with yellow wood trees and aloe gardens with views over the Komati valley all the way to Swaziland. The trial then plunges into the Bankspruit gorge taking you past crystal pools and rapids through a pristine gorge forest to the foot of the second highest waterfall in Mpumalanga, then out of the gorge and across old veld pastures filled with game back to the hiking camp situated on the very edge of the escarpment.
Comments: The God's Window Camp is electrified, there are 3 charming double story wooden pagodas, not tree houses but rock houses, built into the extraordinary sandstone rock canyons that are a feature of this estate, with bunk beds each sleeping 8 for a maximum of 24. Each hut is equipped with a fridge, stove and braai plus kitchen utensils and a sink. The camp has 4 open air hot showers incorporated into the rocks as well as 3 toilets that look over the whole of the Komati valley down to Badplaas as well a ladies only toilets and shower block and a spectacular natural boma with a fire place and seating to create a spectacular and comfy bush camp. The trail has Green Flag status.

Description: The Rhenosterpoort Hiking trail is yet another beautiful trail to be found in the Waterberg mountains. The Rhenosterpoort trail consists of a circular day walk that start and finishes at the camp plus a short, hour long, trail. Situated under the shade of several large trees, the camp is an ideal place to relax after the trail. The owners have provided exceptional facilities including a gas stove, hot showers, flush toilets and a refrigerator. There is no electricity but that adds to the bush experience. Candles are provided but bring along your torches and gas lamps. The main hiking camp sleeps twenty people. Paraplegics should be able to use the facilities in the camp with a little help now and again

Mateke Tree camp and River camp

Location: Mateke Game Farm on the Schoongelegen Road
Description: Two circular trails leads one to the most spectacular and scenic areas on a 2000ha farm. Both trails are well marked. The Njala trail (13km) follows the Mamba River with its natural pools,and takes one to stunning views and wonderful picnic spots. The Kudu trail (9km) goes into the mountains and through dense indigenous forest, to kloof areas and views with nothing but unspoilt bushveld as far as the eye can see. Shorter hiking options are available for the not so keen hiker. Neville Grading: 3-5
