Klipspringer: Augrabies
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Augrabies [Back to Top]
Description: The Augrabies Falls National Park is situated in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The falls and gorge were formed over millions of years as the mighty Orange River eroded its way through the granite rock that lay in its path to the southern Atlantic ocean . The Orange River drains a vast area of Southern Africa, stretching from the mountains of Lesotho in the east and includes the Vaal catchments area of the Free State and the southern part of Gauteng. The trail is of three days duration and should be considered as moderate to strenuous especially during the hotter months of the year. In fact the trail is closed from 15 October to the end of march because of the extreme heat experienced in the area.

Description: The Izemfene Hiking trail is a two day backpack route situated on a 2500ha farm in the Biggarsberg Mountain range close to the picturesque little town of Glencoe in KwaZulu Natal. The trail is quite strenuous, especially under hot conditions and recommended for experienced hikers. The trail has a wide variety of flora and fauna and is well worth the distance involved in getting there. Day 1 - 12Km Old Clubhouse to Dipkraal Camp Site. Day 2 - 10,5Km Dipkraal Camp to Old Clubhouse. The Izemfene Hiking trail is a trail that is well worth doing. It is well laid out but, with the exception of the first three kilometres, fairly tough, especially in the heat of summer. The landscape of KwaZulu Natal is different from other areas of our country and is certainly worth the additional journey distance to pay a visit.

Wolkberg Wilderness
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Haenertsburg
Description: There are no facilities apart from a few indistinct tracks that dissect it. The hiker can choose his own route and number of days he spends in the area and pitches his/her tent anywhere they choose. Normally wilderness hiking is undertaken by experienced hikers equipped with tents and everything they may possibly need to cover any eventuality. Map reading skills are essential as is a knowledge of First Aid. Wolkberg is a rugged area and hiking in this area can be classed as strenuous and should be only attempted by those who are fit. The hike leader should be an experienced hiker with strong leadership skills. It is important to plan your route before hand and let someone know beforehand your proposed route, the equipment that you are taking with you, your date of return. Never hike alone, especially in a wilderness area. There are no toilet facilities in the wilderness and provision has to be made to dig a whole and burry the excrement. All waste such a tin cans and plastic must be carried out and disposed of after the hike.

Bald Ibis Hiking Trail

Description: The Bald Ibis trail has been in existence for several years and must rank as one of the best. The trail offers both a two day backpack route plus an easier day route option for those who would like to have a less strenuous time of it. This is a lovely trail but certainly one that can be considered quite strenuous. If you consider that the backpacking route might be beyond you then the day route option might appeal to you as an alternative. However, the backpack route is certainly worth doing if possible.

Mozambique Beach Hike
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Inhambane [Back to Top]
Description: Coastal hikes have always been popular and Mozambique has long been a popular holiday destination with South Africans. It is then not surprising that the idea of a Mozambique Beach hike has caught the imagination of so many hikers over the past few years, since its inception. Credit must be given to Jill Salt who has so capably put itinerary together.
Comments: Please note that travel in Mozambique can be a little uncomfortable, so come with an open mind, and a sense of adventure. The queues at the Mozambique border are sometimes long and tiring, so expect a few delays, and a certain amount of frustration. It's all worth it once you get to the beach!

This camp, equipped with chalets, campsites and a small shop. Since the first day was only a 10km walk and a 700m ascent. Day 2 - Centenary Hut (2200m) to upper Injisuthi cave (3300m) The cave was rated as very comfortable and kept the cold wind well outside. Day 3 - Injisuthi Cave (~3300) to Marble Baths (1800m) via Mafadi (3450m) 45 hours from base camp to summit. Day 4 - Marble Baths (1800m) to Injisuthi Base Camp (1500m). The Mafadi requires high fitness levels and an adventurous attitude. Note that water needs to be properly planned, since several parts of the route follow ridges. The "thin air" between 2500m-3500m should be taken into consideration when coming from sea level.

Fish River Canyon
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Keetmanshoop
Description: The Fish River Canyon hiking trail is unique among trails in Africa The trail itself, follows 90kms of this amazing wonder of nature, from the view site at Hobas to finish at the hot water spa resort of Ai-Ais. Some sections at the beginning of this downhill have chains to help. This descent is considered by most to be the toughest part of the whole trail. To take two days to accomplish the first leg of the trail to Palm Springs is considered in line with completing the trail to Ai-Ais in five days. It is important to realize that this is the most rugged part of the trail and takes time to negotiate. There is plenty of boulder hopping to be done and pools of water to find ones way around. From Palm Springs, the walk down Canyon starts becoming easier. From here on, 20-30 kms a day can be achieved, especially if the recognized shortcuts are taken. Just before reaching the causeway, hikers pass the grave of Lieutenant Thilo von Trotha, a German officer killed in a skirmish between the Germans and the local Nama people in 1905. This last part of the trail takes about four to five hours to accomplished. At this stage of the trail, all the hiker wants to do is to reach the end of the hike. Ice-cold beer, real food and the thought of being clean again is enough to squeeze the last effort out of weary and sore legs

Location: Travel north from King William's Town on the road to Stutterheim for 13km. Turn left at the sign, left again to Pirie Trout Hatchery. Follow the gravel road for 7km, passing the Rooikrans Dam.
Description: 105km/6 day; average to difficult, must be fit; one way (linear); overnight huts; 20 persons max. The starting point at the Information Centre is about 2 km further on the Maden Dam. Day 1 - Maden Dam to Gwili-Gwili: 15,0 km / 6 hours. This is a fairly demanding walk through indigenous forest, and pine plantations. A converted forest house accommodates 30. It is equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, bath, sink, showers, wood stove and outdoor braai. Flocks of Cape parrots live in the forest. The view overlooking the forest canopy below is exhilarating. Day 2 - Gwili-Gwili to Dontsa: 18,5 km / 7,5 km hours. A walk through the moist forest along the ridge of the foothills of Mount Thomas. At Dontsa there are rock pools. Three traditionally styled rondavels provide accommodation. Day 3 - Dontsa Forest to Cata Forest: 19,1 km / 8,5 hours. This is a strenuous climb to the plateau grasslands with a steep descent to the Eseka River below. Overnight hut(s) provide basic amenities. Day 4 - Cata Huts to Mnyameni Valley: 14,4 km / 7 hours. The trail climbs form the huts to Geju Peak (1850 m) affording magnificent views as far as Queenstown. Day 5 - Mnyameni Hut to Zingcuka Forest: 17,7 km / 8 hours. The trail continues along a contour path. Look out for birds of prey, baboons and dassies. Many pools along the trail provide an ideal resting place. Bushbuck, duiker, samango monkeys and loeries inhabit this area. It is about a two-hour walk to the hut from the last pool. Day 6 - Zingcuka Hut to Tyume River (Hogsback): 16,5 km / 7 hours. The last day continues through the forest and passes an impressive waterfall. The trail ends 3 km from Hogsback.
Comments: The tumble of mountains (Amatola range) and forests between King William's Town and Hogsback is linked by the full six-day trail. Two-day loops on the Amatola include the Cata, Dontsa, Evelyn, GwiliGwili and Zingcuka Loops. There are a number of entry and exit points on the main Amatola Trail. To arrange own transport. Carry ow water. The full trail starts at Maden Dam and ends at the Tyume River near Hogsback. Unfit or inexperienced hikers should not attempt the trail. Snowfalls may be expected during the winter. The best time to tackle the full trail is between October and March, despite occasionally very hot days. An aspect of the trail that makes it fascinating is that it was the focus of several decisive battles between the British and Xhosa forces in the Frontier Wars. Amatola means 'place of many calves' - grazing lands used by the Xhosa and Khoi before them. Also mountain peaks, waterfalls, mammals and bird watching.

Woodcliffe
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Maclear
Location: Follow the R56 to Maclear and ask directions to Woodcliffe at the Municipal Office. In the Joelshoek Valley about 22 km from Maclear.
Description: The Woodcliffe Cave Trail is situated in the lovely Joelshoek Valley approximately 22km from the picturesque little town of Maclear. Woodcliffe Cave Trail has been around for a number years and has received excellent reviews from the media. Why not visit it next time that you decide to do a trail in the area.

Hangklip
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Makhado [Back to Top]
Description: Hanglip Hiking Trail is a beautiful trail, especially since sections of it have now been rerouted to take in more indigenous forest. The facilities have also been upgraded to provide for the needs of the hiker. More improvements are planned for the months ahead in line with Komatiland Forestry's commitment to ecotourism. Some of us older hikers will remember the old Soutpansberg Hiking trail in the days when it was established as a five day backpack trail which stretched from Hanglip over to Ou Entabeni Hut. It then formed part of the National Hiking Way Board system that was intended to link the Soutpansberg with the mountains of the Cape. However, the plans of the then government never materialized and first the middle section of the trail was closed and then more recently the eastern section was closed due to widespread fire damage. This left Hanglip as the only part of the Soutpansberg trail for a number of years until the recent reopening of the Entabeni section. This is a trail that is well worth doing. Consideration should be made to doing Hanglip in conjunction with Entabeni, thus making the journey more worthwhile especially as the tolls en route are quite high. During summer, the weather can be very hot and shortage of water along the trail can be a problem. Take a minimum of 2 litres but preferably more.

Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Middelburg
Location: On the edge of the Olifants River Valley. Gravel. Last 12,5km can be difficult after heavy rain. If in doubt check with owner
Description: TheCycad trail is easy to moderate. The only fairly difficult section is the climb up to Arendsnes from the riverMany hikers will know and have walked this and the Baboon trail in years gone bye. Due to part of the land being sold, the trails have had to be redeveloped and an exciting new overnight backpack trail is the result. The Olifants River gorge lends itself so well to hiking that there are a number of excellent trails in this area and the new Cycad trail is one of the best. This is certainly a trail that is well worth a visit. The days are not long but are well worth taking ones time about as the routes are spectacular. In dry conditions, it is essential to take along adequate water as that found in the Olifants is not drinkable. Neville Grading: 6.54
Comments: Special interests include Cycads, also the Encephalartos middelburghensis, indigenous to this area. Many birds, also the Black Eagle and Fish Eagle. Trees, wild flowers and wild life. Cliffs and ravines of the Olifants River. No dogs, no fires. Beware of snakes.

Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Mossel Bay
Location: In the Outeniqua Mountains between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.
Description: The Attakwaskloof Nature Reserve through which the trail runs forms part of the Outeniqua Nature Reserve and is administered by Western Cape Nature Conservation Board. Although officially closed, Western Cape Nature Conservation Board allow groups of hikers who have previously walked this trail to book it. The trail still has the problems that previously existed, namely the lack of safe parking and accommodation at the beginning, the fact that the days are long and need a high degree of fitness to walk them and the remoteness of the overnight hut and the ensuing problems in maintaining it to the high degree that Cape Nature insists. We wish to thank Cape Nature for allowing us to continue to use this trail and still hope that one day the Attakwaskloof Trail will once again regain its rightful place as one of the great trails open to all.
Comments: The Outeniqua Mountains are covered with fynbos. Many species of ericas bloom between September and October. Rock pools and Attakwaskloof Pass with beautiful views. Permit: Outeniqua Office, Witfontein; Tel: 044 870-8323

Rameron Pigeon Trail
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Nieuwoudtville
Description: The Rameron Pigeon Trail 4-7 days. The route is the same irrespective of the number of days taken. By combining days one can make the duration shorter but then the trail becomes more strenuous as the days become longer. There are designated camp sites on route at Kareebos, Kameel se Gat, Suikerbosfontein, Swartkliphuis, Bo-Kloof, Olienhoutbos and Groot Tuin (the starting point). The first part of the trail leads to Kareebos (5,9km -2-3 hours). Much of the time is spent in indigenous forest on the banks of the Oorlogskloof River. From Kareebos the trail leads to Kameel se Gat (7,9km- 6-7 hours). The first 2,8km of the day continues along the banks of the river until a waterhole is reached. From here the trail joins the second day of the Rock Pigeon route until you reach the turn off to Kameel se Gat. The trail then leads past several large stone structures that date back to the early days of the pioneer farmers.

Rock Pigeon Hiking Trail
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Nieuwoudtville
Description: Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is situated 16km outside Nieuwoudtville and about 50km from Vanrhynsdorp in the Northern Cape Province. The reserve comprises of 4776 hectares of mountains which have been dissected by deep river gorges through which the Oorlogskloof River flows. The area has a rich and varied plant life being situated on the transition/ecotone area of the Fynbos and Karoo Biomes. There are two major hiking trails that have been laid out in the reserve plus two day walks. The trail starts Groot Tuin. There is a overnight shelter available for hikers at Groot Tuin. The first day of the trail to Brakwater is 4km and can be accomplished in 2-3 hours. This day can be combined with day two but the rugged terrain on the second day makes this a very strenuous option. The second day (8,5km) takes 6-7 hours to accomplish. Soon after the beginning of the day's walk the trail ascends to the plateau with the help of a rope and a ladder. After a while the trail once again descends to the river and follows this for some distance through riverine thicket until once again climbing towards Driefontein overnight camp. At each campsite along the trails are 5 tents that accommodate 3 people each. Group size is normally 15 but special arrangements can be made for larger groups. At the start of the trails is a hut with a gravel floor, candle lights, stretchers and a long drop toilet and a lapa with picnic tables and chairs

Prospector's
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Pilgrim's Rest
Description: The quaint old gold mining town of Pilgrim's Rest is the starting point for the 5-day Prospector's Hiking Trail. If you don't have the time to do the whole trail there are several shorter options. The history of gold mining operations in the Pilgrim's Rest area goes back more than 160 years to the 1840's. The gold rush began in 1873 when the Lydenburg magistrate advised the Transvaal Volksraad that gold had been discovered in the streams. Hundreds of diggers from as far a field as Australia, America, England and France flocked to the gold-fields to make their fortune. The trail passes many relics from these early days of mining as one climbs away from the start of the trail. The Prospector's trail is a unique trail that brings together the historical interests and natural environment of the area, beautifully. The full trail is, however, not easy and should be attempted only by fit hikers. The shorter options should be considered as an alternative by those that are less

Closest Town: Porterville [Back to Top]
Location: East of Porterville, north of Tulbagh
Description: Eight different hiking trails (6km to 16km). Shelters available for those who would like to sleep over. Magnificent flora. Bookings from 07:30 to 16:00 Monday to Friday. Groot Winterhoek is another one of those hidden treasures of nature to be found in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It consists of a large area of prime, unspoilt, fynbos with magnificent mountain panoramas wherever one looks. From the mountains, babbling brooks cascade down to form exquisite rock pools that almost seem too pure to tarnish by swimming in. Protea and Erica add vivid colour to the briliant white of the quartzite of the path, while the tea coloured water of the streams contrasts with the rich green of the grass. This then is the setting for the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Trail. Although this is a wilderness area and hence the hiker can walk and camp anywhere, there are well defined paths to follow

Naukluft Trail
Type: Hiking trail
Closest Town: Windhoek [Back to Top]
Description: To walk 120kms over eight days in the desert may not appeal to many people. However, once one has walked one of the major trails in Namibia, the magic of the Namib draws one back again and again to experience the wonders of one of the oldest deserts in the world. To many people the word desert conjures up visions of sand and dunes that stretch away as far as the eye can see, but as we found out on our trip to Naukluft, a desert can also consist of mountains and some of the most rugged scenery to be found anywhere in Africa. The trail is 120 km long and completed in 8 days. Only first part can be completed in 4 days. The trail is open from 1 March to the third Friday of October only due to climatic conditions. Trail starts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays of the first 3 weeks of each month. Camping facilities and water are available at stop-over points. Groups must be minimum of 3 and maximum of 12 participants. Own food and camping equipment must be provided
