Description: This new hiking trail was designed to provide adventure to serious hikers as well as casual lovers of the outdoors. Enjoy the exhilarating, all-year-round splendor of the Hex River Valley while you explore the history of the region. The trail takes you back to the 1870's when the South African Railways built the first railroad to the North through the monstrous mountains along this beautiful valley. It soon became the main transport artery for the Diamond Rush to Kimberley. Remainders of ox wagon trails are still visible at some points. The entire length of the botterboom Hiking Trail provides for a four-day hike, but your host, Stephaan Jordaan, will indicate shorter sections for those interested in one or two days only. Sleep-over facilities (huts / tents) are available. Throughout the trail, hikers can enjoy the large variety of indigenous plants, varying from Botterboom and Aloe, to Cape Fynbos. Permits must be obtained at the Veldskoen Padstal at a cost of R15.00 per person. Veldskoen is open 7 days a week from 08:00 to 17:00 and offers all your necessities with regards to food and drinks.

Description: The only self-guided hiking / canoe trail in South Africa The canoe trail starts at Port Alfred and ends at Horseshoe Bend, located in Water's Meeting Nature Reserve. The trail can be extremely unpleasant in strong winds. Scenic views of the Horseshoe Bend in the Kowie River. Abundant bird life, including the conspicuous fish eagle. There is a limit of 16 people for the trail at any one time. Canoe Trail: 21 km/4 hours; from Port Alfred to Horse Shoe Bend. Horseshoe Bend Hiking Trails: there are three trails of 3km, 3km and 9 km respectively.
