Today, thousands of animals including lion, black and white rhino, buffalo and elephant roam this diverse and fascinating reserve. The Great Fish River was a hotly contested border during the Frontier Wars of 1779 to 1878 between the Xhosa nation, Dutch farmers and the 1820 Settlers from England. Kwandwe's reception building is a Frontier War-era fortified homestead, and the Reserve boasts its own intimate chapel. Kwandwe Main Lodge is set along the aloe-studded banks of the Great Fish River. It offers nine suites with private plunge pools, and spacious thatched game-viewing decks with magnificent views. The Uplands Homestead is a sensitively restored 1905 farmhouse comprising three spacious en-suite bedrooms with private terraces. Kwandwe Ecca Lodge offers six intimate suites with spacious living areas and en-suite bathrooms. All accommodation options offer world-class sophistication and style in the African bush.
Description: 3 romantic early Settler cottages built between 1823 and 1827 in the Artifices Sqaure area. The early residents in this historic neighbourhood were tanners, thatchers, manglers, carpenters, jewellers and bonnet makers. Settlers Hill Manor, a spacious Victorian Manor built in the 1860's has high ceilings, yellowwood floors and spacious rooms surrounded by a wide verandah. There are four en-suite rooms, one of which has a private lounge.

Description: 7 Linking the Garden Route and the Wild Coast, a two to three night stay is recommended to explore the vibrant university city of Grahamstown. Each of the nine double guest rooms at the Cock House is individual and special, whether located in the main house or in the converted stables. Two rooms are family suites sleeping four while the Brink room and Long room boast magnificent four-poster beds. Self-catering accommodation is also available in four spacious and comfortable two-bedroom apartments next door to the main house. Wheelchair access is possible to the two ground floor flats.
