Mankwe Camp to Moremi Third Bridge

Botswana's Moremi Wildlife Reserve is located in the Eastern part of the Okavango Delta, bordering the Chobe National Park on the south-western part of the Park. The Moremi Game Reserve covers almost one third of the Okavango Delta which consists of pans, flood plains, open lagoons, water holes, grasslands, forests of acacia trees, parklands and Mopane Woodlands.

Moremi is home to a vast variety of animals and birds, which have adapted to the swamp conditions.

One can get to Moremi by way of either the South or North Gates if you are not flying in to one of the Lodges in the park. Coming from Maun, one will travel in a North-Easterly direction along a tar road to Shorobe which is approximately 30 km out of Maun. From Shorobe, the road become gravel. From here on, you will need a 4x4 vehicle due to deep, soft sand and mud in the wet season.

About 100 Km from Maun, you will reach South Gate, where there is a public camping site with ablution facilities. A good map of the reserve is advisable, with a GPS with a Tracks4Africa map being first prize. Once inside the park, you can drive on the tracks and visit each of the four camps. These camps are South Gate, North Gate, Third Bridge and Xakanaxa.

The best time to visit the Moremi Wildlife Reserve is from July to October when the game concentrates at the permanent water holes. The Reserve is in a malaria area and the water is not for drinking, unless boiled first. A 4x4 vehicle is needed and the nearest fuel station is at Maun.

Accommodation is in private rest camps as well as camping sites in the four camps that belongs to the reserve.

Third Bridge will be getting new ablution facilities, replacing the old ones that fell into disrepair.
