Olifants Restcamp in the Kruger National Park

Olifants Restcamp in the Kruger Park is one of a dozen Restcamps in the Kruger National Park. "Restcamps" are larger camps with shops, restaurants and offices. They normally also have other facilities like pools etc.

Olifants Camp is located on a high koppie next to the Olifants River. This setting makes for a fantastic view over the river with lots of animals visiting the river and the area that is viewable from some of the huts and the restaurant and shopping area.

This very beautiful camp is also situated in a very good gameviewing area, with many elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards and others roaming wild in this area.

There are several beautiful places to see near Olifants, like the two bridges over the Olifants River, the hippo pools on the S89, the beautiful viewpoints over the Olifants River, the beautiful drive next to the Letaba River further up north and also the beautiful view from the restaurant at Olifants Camp and many more.

For game drives, bicycle trips, game walks and others, talk to the people at the Olifants registration office when booking into Olifants Camp.

We recommend the following short gameviewing trip.

Distance 83km.

Drive Time without stop = 2 hours and 10 min.

There are many different possible day trips from Olifants. One can visit all the places that are in the immediate vicinity or one can go on a day-long trip that includes maybe a visit to a restaurant in a camp like Satara or Letaba. We are going to discuss a shortish trip that will more-or-less cover the nearest must-see places. For the longer trips, we suggest you download our book that we describe below.

From Olifants, turn right over the low bridge over the Olifants river towards Olifants Camp, where you may have breakfast in the restaurant with its must see view over the Olifants River, or you may pass on to the Olifants Lookout and the Von Wielligh Baobab, postponing the restaurant view for the return trip, when you will pass Olifants Restcamp again.

At the lookout you may disembark and stretch your legs a bit while searching for animals inside and on the other side of the river. Binoculars will come in handy here.

From the lookout towards the Von Wielligh Baobab you will have the Letaba River on your right hand side. There are a few places where you may drive to the riverbank to have a better view of the river.

Turn into the S93 past the airstrip back towards Olifants Camp where you may again have something to eat or drink before moving on to the N'wananzi River outlook.

After enjoying the N'wananzi outlook, take the tar H1-5 towards the high bridge over the Olifants, where the view is both good and where there are normally a wide variety of animals to be seen.

From the bridge, carry on with the H1-5 and turn left into the S89 towards the Bangu Waterhole where you can spend some time watching animals and birds before going back to Olifants Camp

In order to help people to get to know the Kruger Park better, we wrote a book containing large pictures, short descriptions, GPS Coordinates and travel times of more than 300 waypoints like camps, picnic spots, waterholes, dams, viewpoints and other interesting points along all of the public roads of the Kruger Park

The book is written in the form of a 20-day tour, taking the reader on a virtual tour through the park, giving the reader a rare graphical oversight over the park. Use the many GPS Coordinates to enjoy a pre-visit to the different places on Google Earth to make your virtual tour even more fun!

Although it is possible to follow the routes in 20 days, few people have the time available to travel all the routes described in the book, therefore it will be a good idea to download the book and do the virtual tour and then, after that experience, to design your visit to the Park as well as the trips and places you want to see and experience. .....read more"
