Outeniqua Hiking Trail

Description: Outeniqua hiking trail is situated in the Outeniqua mountains between George and Plettenberg Bay in the Cape Province. The main features of this trail are the beautiful Knysna forests with their numerous bubbling streams cascading through glades of Tree Ferns and the Cape Fynbos that the trail traverses along the mountain ridges. The trail in total covers a distance of 106.5 Kms and there are eight overnight huts provided for the hiker.The Outeniqua trail is a long trail and should only be attempted by experienced hikers. For the novice, the trail can be done in sections of two days or more. The trail is well marked and is a credit to the forestry department. The accommodation is adequate and well maintained. Overall, the trail must rank as one of the top six long distance trails in Southern Africa and a must for the dedicated hiker and those that enjoy the African indigenous forests. For those hikers who wish to really indulge themselves, the Harkerville coastal trail provides an ideal two day extension to the Outeniqua trail.

It is not an easy trail and people with a fear of heights may have some problems. It is a trail to take at an easy pace and enjoy the scenery. The Perdekop route is ideal for hikers finishing the Outeniqua Trail early and sleeping over at Harkerville, wishing for a short walk during the afternoon

Attakwaskloof

Description: The Attakwaskloof Nature Reserve through which the trail runs forms part of the Outeniqua Nature Reserve and is administered by Western Cape Nature Conservation Board. Although officially closed, Western Cape Nature Conservation Board allow groups of hikers who have previously walked this trail to book it. The trail still has the problems that previously existed, namely the lack of safe parking and accommodation at the beginning, the fact that the days are long and need a high degree of fitness to walk them and the remoteness of the overnight hut and the ensuing problems in maintaining it to the high degree that Cape Nature insists. We wish to thank Cape Nature for allowing us to continue to use this trail and still hope that one day the Attakwaskloof Trail will once again regain its rightful place as one of the great trails open to all.
