Description:Robertson was founded in 1853. It is the largest wine-producing area of the Cape under irrigation. Its superior wines have won many national and international awards. Robertson also breeds most of the country's top racehorses. The Breede River Valley is flanked on its eastern side by a long range of mountains appropriately named the Langeberge and it is among the foothills of those mountains that the town of Robertson nestles cosily where the river is close by. The soil is fertile and the town is well laid out, giving rise to tree-lined streets and magnificent gardens. An excellent irrigation system helps in the greening of the town, drawing its reserves from dams and reservoirs that catch the winter rains and the melting snow from the Langeberge peaks in spring.
