Description:The most feverish diamond rush the world has ever known took place in the town of Lichtenburg. Within a year of the discovery of a fabulous gem on the farm Elandsputte, in 1926, more than 100 000 people had descended on the diggings. As with many boomtowns, the frenzy eventually subsided, leaving a legacy of character and history. Tourist attractions include: Afrikaans Language Monument (erected during the 1975 Language Centenary Festival); Ampies Basson Cultural History Museum (details the history and sociological background of the town's inhabitants); Burgher Monument (it contains the names of 87 burghers who died during the South African War); Burning Vlei (thick layers of subterranean peat that have been burning for centuries, creating a rare natural phenomenon); Lichtenburg Museum (a socio-historical museum situated on De La Rey Square); Lichtenburg Game Breeding Farm (40 of the world's rare animal species are bred on this farm run by the National Zoological Gardens); Mzilikazi's Wall (in the 1830s, Chieftain Mzilikazi built this 1-km stone wall along the Malmani River as an animal trap); Moddergat (a large dolomite sinkhole); Boschbult Monument (erected 30km out of town on the Ottosdal Road, it commemorates the Battle of Boschbult fought during the South African War).
