Description:The remains of ancient workings bear testimony to the recovery of gold in southern Africa from time immemorial in the fabled De Kaap Valley. The first significant mining (as opposed to panning) for gold took place in this valley through which the Kaap River runs. At first it was indeed alluvial gold that was found at the western end of the valley - known as the Duiwelskantoor, or Devil's Office, because of its bizarre rock formations - but with the unwavering optimism of their breed the early prospectors, who were reminded of the Cape of Good Hope by the scenery that surrounded them, named the valley Kaapsche Hoop (hope of the Cape). A mining commissioner's office, two banks, other commercial buildings and government offices were erected. The village is now Kaapsehoop, a charming hamlet known for its wild horses.

Description:Klerksdorp city was named after J de Clerq, first magistrate in the area after twelve Voortrekker families settled on the banks of the Schoonspruit in 1837. The discovery of gold in 1886 saw thousands of prospectors flock to the area. Today, Klerksdorp is the centre for a large mining and agricultural economy and boasts the second largest grain co-operative in the world. Attractions include Goudkoppie (the old mining shafts date back to the 18th century); Jack Scott House (this tin house was imported from Britain and was the home of Jack Scott, the father of modern-day mining in the area); Klerksdorp Mines (interesting tours can be arranged on request); Ou Dorp Hiking Trail (this walk meanders through the old part of town. Remains of pre-historic kraals can also be seen); The Railway Station and Old Flag Room (opened by President Paul Kruger when the line from Krugersdorp reached the town in 1897 - Klerksdorp's first national monument).

Description:Kosmos is another village founded by Johan Schoeman, the founder of Schoemansville. Inspired by the tranquillity of the scene as he rowed towards the hill on which the settlement was to be developed, he chose the Greek word for the universe with which to name it. A profusion of flowering shrubs and trees enhances the scene Schoeman found so enchanting.

Description:Kroondal, situated on a farm originally known as Kronendal, was one of 22 German Lutheran mission congregations established in the former Natal and Transvaal. The farm, which was in existence since 1843, was registered in 1858 in the name of Jan Michiel van Helsdingen, formerly of the Hermannsburg Missionary Society. A mission was established here, but when the society could no longer afford to provide maintenance for anyone but the missionaries, the lay workers who had worked at the station settled as independent farmers nearby. The settlement was surveyed and divided into plots in 1889 and a school which acquired a reputation for excellence was founded. Among those of the pupils who were not German-speaking were Louis Botha, who was to become South Africa's first Prime Minister, and the Afrikaans poet Totius, J D du Toit. The largely German-speaking town has a distinctly Teutonic architecture and cultural atmosphere. Tourist attractions include a Lutheran Church (a national monument built in 1896 and restored between 1979 and 1982); the Tobacco and Cotton Research Institute (an interesting tour is offered by this branch of the Department of Agriculture).
