About 20 kilometres east of the N3 Highway lies
the HiPlains in the North-eastern Free State. In the centre of the HiPlains,
on the spine of the Drakensberg, lies Vrede, the town of "peace",
close to the Mpumalanga border and surrounded by a large, farming district
filled with diversity for the holiday maker or traveller.
The town of Vrede is surrounded by undulating, highveld hills. Only
one and a half hours from Johannesburg, the area is midway between Durban
and Nelspruit, and the alternative route of Durban to Johannesburg.
It is also on the main route from Johannesburg via Newcastle to the
North Coast and Zululand. The town is steeped in history.
HiPlains stretches from the Langeberg and Bothasberg in the east, the
N3 Highway in the west, the quaint, one-horse town of Roadside in the
north, and almost to Warden in the south. It is a holiday and adventure
breakaway with a wide range of activities on offer. From fishing and
boating on the Vrede Dam, hiking, mountain biking, caving, abseiling,
rock climbing, horse riding, game viewing, hunting, browsing and shopping
or just relaxing in the quaint pubs and restaurants in the area, there
is something for every taste.
