Upington to Witsand Nature Reserve
We camped at Witsand
Witsand Nature Reserve is a scenic park, teeming with bird life, including the Namaqua sandgrouse, sociable weaver and Africa's smallest raptor - the pygmy falcon.
Witsand has sensual, flowing white dunes - twenty to sixty metres high - surrounded by copper-red Kalahari sand, Acacia woodland and the Langberg Mountain range. Home of the famous ‘Brulsand' or Roaring Sands of the Kalahari.
The Roaring Sand or Brulsand is probably the most well known feature of the Witsand Nature Reserve.
At Witsand there are more than 170 species of birds for birdwatchers. They have a well positioned sunken bird-hide from where one can watch birds and game coming to drink at a waterpoint just a few metres away. The hide has proven to be a great asset to the reserve.
Gemsbok, red hartebeest, springbok, duiker and steenbok are abundant on the reserve, while a small herd of kudu has established itself on the reserve.
Accommodation is in four-star chalets, bungalows and a beautiful camping site, with electical points.
Witsand also offers four star conference facilities, picnic sites for day visitors, a lapa to rent on a daily basis and a swimming pool.
A small kiosk selling locally made curios, basic foodstuffs and soft drinks is open daily.
The Information Centre offers various exhibitions, nature books, magazines, videos to view and natural and archeological treasures occurring in the area.
Witsand is renowned for the fact that there are no restrictions where visitors can go on foot, they also have dune boards and bicycles for rent.
The region is regarded as the finest area in Africa for stargazing and photographic opportunities are endless, with the dunes, blue skies and all the natural assets of Witsand making the place a photographer's paradise.
Witsand prides itself on its friendly, personal service.
