Sesriem to Swakopmund

3 July 2006

Swakopmund is Namibia's second biggest town and the traditional hangout for the country's holidaymakers.

Some may think the icy Atlantic Ocean does not make for surfing or swimming in the sea, but its pleasant summer climate and decent beaches attract surfers, anglers and beach lovers from all over the world, while the lively nightlife and restaurants more than make up for the cold water.

The town's character is a mixture of Bohemian and Bavarian, inhabited by artists, hippies, Germans, Afrikaners, English, Hereros and others to form a rich cultural melting pot of different people.

For night time entertainment, the town offers casinos, many pubs and restaurants and an assortment of drama, music and cultural events.

Just outside Swakopmund is a very popular place where one can do sand boarding, quadbiking, camel rides and offroad driving. Swakopmund also offers a host of other attractions, including excursions by boat to see dolphins and seals, shorebased angling, skin diving, surfing or just lazing on the beach.

Driving along the stunning dune-lined coastline is particularly beautiful, whether you go south to Walvis Bay or to the National West Coast Recreation Area in the north. The road goes right next to the beach and leads to the Ugab rivermouth and further to the fishermen's paradise of Henties Bay and Cape Cross on the way.

The Welwitchia Drive that leads to the Moon Landscape at the Swakop Rivier and into the northern part of the Namib Naukluft Park is also very interesting.

Something few people know is how well one can ski on sand dunes. To ski, you don't have to go to the cold and the ice any more. Have a look.
