ABOUT LINX AFRICA
Sesriem to Sossusvlei and back.
Sossusvlei, Namibia's famous must-see in the heart of the Namib Desert, is a huge clay pan, sheltered by huge sand dunes. Some of the breathtaking mountains of sand are, at 300 metres, the highest in the world.
After heavy rainfalls, which occurs at an average of about once every ten years in this area, does the vlei fill with water. Because of the clay layers, hardly any water infiltration takes place, leaving a turquoise lake to remain for quite a long time, creating the most beautiful natural effects with the flowing lines of the dunes.
These dunes have developed over a time period of many millions of years. Theory is that the large quantities of sand were first deposited into the Alantic Ocean by the Orange river. This material was then moved northwards by the Benguela current to be deposited back onto the land by the surf, creating coastal dunes. These dunes were then shifted further and further inland by the wind.
The huge dunes of the Namib desert are in a continious process of being reshaped by the wind. It forces the grains of sand on the flat windward slope upwards to the crest of the dune. Here they fall down on the other side, with the effect that the dunes are moving in the predominant wind direction.
