Pretoria to Skukuza

Via Nelspruit & Phabeni Gate
Distance about 381 km.

Our first camp was Skukuza, which is only 38kms from Phabeni Gate.

We stopped at the Lake Panic hide just a few kilos out of Skukuza. A frolicking pod of hippo were rolling, grunting and splashing in the water. One of the hippo was actually under the deck of the hide and caused great consternation below us by blowing a shower of water through the wooden slats...

Pretoria to Skukuza

The N4 to Nelspruit This route to the Kruger National Park takes one through three toll gates at Bronkhorstspruit, Middelburg and Machadodorp. One can also take the scenic Kaapschehoop route via Barberton to Nelspruit, or break the journey with a visit to the Sodwala Caves en-route.

From Nelspruit travel on the R40 through White River to Hazyview. The Phabeni Gate is very convenient and just 10kms along the R526 to the Paul Kruger Gate.

The Kruger National Park has an estimated big 5 population of 12,000 elephant, 1,500 lion, 2,500 buffalo, 1,000 leopard and 5,000 rhino, both black and white. It is advisable to allow for about 25km per hour when planning in which camps to stay on your trip inside Kruger. This will prevent you missing an exciting sighting because you are rushing to make it to a camp before the gates close. No vehicles are permitted to drive outside the camps after dark. Consider taking a night game drive from one of he camps, they offer an excellent opportunity to see predators which hunt at night.

Phabeni Gate to Skukuza offers mixed woodlands with pockets of game such as impala, zebra, blue wildebeest and an occassional elephant. A highlight is the Lake Panic hide a few kilometres from Skukuza, with hippos, African darters, herons and kingfishers.

Skukuza is the largest rest camp and is the administrative headquarters of the Kruger National Park. It is situated on the southern banks of the Sabie River. There is a large shop, restaurants, cafeteria, swimming pools, post office, police station, ATM, Internet facilities, fuel station, museum, library, pharmacy and resident doctor. There is a 9-hole golf course 6km from the camp.

The day visitors' centre has a shop, swimming pool and picnic facilities. The camp is well foliaged and there are some very large trees along the edge of the river. Activities and facilities are diverse, as are the animals and plants found both within the camp and in the surrounding areas.

Accommodation at Skukuza, includes bungalows with communal kitchens, bungalows with kitchenettes, luxury riverside bungalows, family cottages, guest cottages, guest houses, safari tents with communal facilities, and caravanning or camping.

We opted for two bungalows (BD2), each with one bedroom with 2 single beds (bedding, towels and complementary soap is provided), en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower, air-conditioning. There is a fridge, hotplate, sink, crockery and utensils on the verandah. and barbeque facilities next to the bungalow.

Activities include game viewing in the camp, bird watching, game drives (day or night) and game walks.

Game Viewing All of the Big 5 can readily be seen in the vicinity of Skukuza. Wild dog may also be spotted. In the camp itself there is a population of warthog. Vervet monkeys also inhabit the camp and can wreck havoc on unguarded possessions. At night genets, thick-tailed bush babies and fruit bats are resident in camp. The bats hang under the eaves of the shop. The river front may offer hippopotamus and buffalo, especially in the early morning.

Vegetation The camp itself is riverine, with large trees such as sycamore fig, jackalberry and Natal mahogany. The surrounding ecozone comprises of thorn thicket on granite/gneiss soils. Knob thorn and sickle bush are prominent.
