Pretoria to Kuruman

Kuruman is the main town in the Kalahari region and is known as the "Oasis of the Kalahari".

Robert Moffat, a Scottish missionary, lived here for fifty years and built the world-famous Moffat church. He later on became the father in law of the famous adventurer, Dr Livingstone when Livingstone married Mary Moffat, his daughter.

This church still exists and is in regular use. Moffat was also the first person to translate the Bible into Setswana.

Kuruman's thriving economy rests on manganese, iron, tiger's eye and blue asbestos mining and agriculture. The richest deposits of blue asbestos in the world are found in the Kuruman district.

Kuruman also benefits from tourism as a halfway stop between Gauteng and Namibia or Cape Town via Upington.

True to its Kalahari nature, the town is known for extreme temperatures during summer and winter, with frost generally occuring during winter months. Moist bearing north and north-east winds bring thunderstorms from December to April. The average area rainfal is about 430mm per annum.

Apart from the Moffat Mission Station, one can visit the Billy Duvenhage Nature Reserve, The Kalahari Raptor Rehabilitation Centre, the Bird Sanctuary that has approximately 115 different species of birds.

Accommodation in De Duine Lodge is next to the Kuruman river on three ha beautiful nature. It has five luxury rooms with dstv.

Every room has its own private sundeck and barbeque facilities. It is situated only one kilometer from the CBD but far from any noisy roads. With in walking distance from the world famous Moffat Mission and a two thousand ha nature reserve with various game species and birds.
