Luderitz to Duwisib

Maltahöhe is situated about 110 km west of Mariental towards the end of the tarred part of the C19 road and it is quite easily accessible. The town was named by Colonel Henning von Burgsdorf, who named it after his wife Malta.

The tiny town of Maltahöhe, with about 2000 inhabitants, caters mainly to the needs of the surrounding farms. A popular stop for visitors is the Maltahöhe Hotel which have a popular pub with a German atmosphere and a restaurant offering good quisine.

About 80 kilometres south-west of Maltahöhe, on the D826, you will find the Castle Duwisib. The Prussian aristocrat Baron Hansheinrich von Wolf who served in the Schutztruppe - and his wealthy American wife Jayta built it in 1908.

This massive dwelling in the arid semi-desert is built from red sandstone and has 22 rooms, a large hall and a shady courtyard with a fountain.

Von Wolf bought a large tract of land and created a horse-stud on this 50000 hectare ranch.

When the First World War broke out, Baron von Wolf immediately volunteered but was killed in action in France. His wife Jayta never returned to Duwisib, but took residence in Munich.

The castle was later bought by the Namibian state and restored as a museum.
