From Swakopmund drive north along the C34 coastal route. The road surface is made of salt, this surface is achieved by mixing gravel with salt water, and can be extremely slippery in misty weather.

Along this route you may visit the saltworks situated north of 'Mile 4' where oysters are cultivated. At 32 kilometres from Swakopmund lies the quaint holiday village of Wlotzkasbaken, and about 6 kilometres to the north of this village lie the orange Teloschistes lichen fields. It is worth pulling off to the side of the road to to have a closer look.

About 32 kilometres north of Henties Bay the plains give way to Laguneberg, a series of low hills east of the road. The road crosses the edge of the White Lady Salt Pan before the the turn-off to Cape Cross Seal Reserve is reached at 54 kilometres from Henties Bay. The Cape Cross Seal Colony is one of the largest colonies of Cape fur seals along the West Coast of Namibia

Another attraction near Henties Bay is the Omdel Dam, situated in the Omaruru River about 30 kilometres from Henties Bay, on the C35 to Uis. The area offers picnic sites, various bird species, especially when there is water in the dam, and interesting desert adapted plants as well as riverine vegetation.

The Desert Rose

Several varieties of gypsum exist. Desert rose (var. selenite rose) is the name given to bladed gypsum crystals that are interlocked in a rose shape (desert rose also describes a similar arrangement of barite crystals).

Selenite is the name given to clear, colourless crystals of gypsum.

Satin spar is the variety name for masses of extremely fine, needle-like, parallel gypsum crystals. Solid masses of gypsum without discernible crystal structure are given the variety name alabaster.
